Our team and story
This monastery was ordered to be built in 1053 by King García Sánchez III of Navarre, ‘the one from Nájera’. In addition to its history, the art hidden behind its walls and the dozens of legends that have grown up over its more than a thousand years of history, the monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla, Yuso and Suso are a unique place in the world because they contain the first evidence of the birth of Castilian and Basque in the famous ‘Glosas Emilianenes’.
In addition to offering you a unique experience in a ‘World Heritage Site’, we want you to know who is behind the hotel and meet our team. In 2024 we will be 10 years managing Hostería San Millán, and 20 years managing Hotel Conde de Badarán, our hotel for groups in the neighbouring village of Badarán.
‘Discover the fantastic team behind Hostería San Millán and the history that has led us to what we are today’.
‘A team of professionals and a family dream that has led us to what we are today’.
1997, a key year. The declaration of the Monasteries as ‘World Heritage Sites’.
In 1997 the Suso and Yuso Monasteries were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
The owners of the Monastery, the Augustinian Recollects, gave the Government of La Rioja a wing of the monastery for the creation of the Hosteria, a charming four-star hotel in La Rioja in a rural setting, managed by a family of hoteliers in the area until they left the establishment in the crisis of 2008.
Our family at Hostería San Millán
We, another family from the San Millán Valley, have been dedicated to the tourist sector for more than 20 years and are very proud to take the reins of this establishment. An emblem for the whole area and the whole of La Rioja.
Our family has always been linked to the world of hostelry, instilling in us since we were born the love for this sector. Our mother, Mari Carmen, cook, and our father, Tomas, butler, served in France for more than 10 years.
Since we have been managing the establishment, our priority has been to update the facilities and focus on quality gastronomy in order to offer you an unforgettable experience in a magical place like the Monastery of Yuso.
‘We, also another family from the San Millán Valley, dedicated for more than 20 years to the tourism sector, took over the reins of this establishment with great pride. An emblem for the whole area and the whole of La Rioja’.
