Yuso Monastery

The Monastery of Yuso, later than the neighbouring Monastery of Suso, was built in the 11th century. It has undergone several reconstructions and extensions over the centuries, in which different styles have been combined, with the Baroque and Renaissance styles standing out above all others. Among its relics are paintings by Juan de Rizzi and the gold and ivory caskets that hold the relics of San Millán.

The Library and Archive are among the best in Spain’s monasteries. In the church, the grille, dating from 1976, which closes off the lower choir, stands out. Also the structure of the choir loft with its 8 carvings and another of the monastery’s jewels, the walnut pulpit. Since 1878, a small community of Augustinian monks has been living here, leading a monastic life and managing visits to the monastery, which does not belong to any religious congregation, but is state property.

The Monastery of Yuso and the Valley of San Millán de la Cogolla

Nestled in the Valley of San Millán de la Cogolla, the Monastery of Yuso is part of a monastic complex together with the Monastery of Suso, located on a nearby hill. These monasteries, dedicated to San Millán de la Cogolla, are considered World Heritage Sites by UNESCO due to their historical and cultural importance.

The history of the Monastery of Yuso is closely linked to the figure of San Millán, a hermit who lived in the region in the 6th century and whose reputation for holiness attracted numerous followers. After his death, several monasteries were erected in his honour, Yuso Monastery being one of the most outstanding.

The Monastery of Yuso and the spaces that have made it a unique place

One of the most outstanding features of the Monastery of Yuso is its impressive cloister, a space of tranquillity and seclusion that reflects monastic life. Decorated with Romanesque columns and sculpted capitals, the cloister is an outstanding example of Spanish medieval art.

Another highlight of the monastery is its library, which houses an impressive collection of manuscripts and ancient books. For centuries, Benedictine monks devoted themselves to copying and preserving religious and literary texts, thus contributing to the preservation of knowledge in the region.

The Yuso Monastery and Spirituality

In addition to its historical and architectural importance, the Monastery of Yuso is a centre of spirituality and culture that continues to attract visitors from all over the world. The Benedictine monks who still reside in the monastery continue the tradition of prayer and work, keeping alive the spiritual heritage of San Millán and his legacy of hospitality and service to others.
