ART AND HISTORY: AN EXPERIENCE IN THE SUSO MONASTERY
The Suso Monastery is the monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla, older than the Yuso Monastery. It dates from the 6th century and the disciples of San Millán emerged from the caves that lived in that area, around the tomb where it had lived as a hermit. Between the sixth and tenth centuries there were several extensions in which different styles were alternated: Visigothic, Arabic and Romanesque.
The importance of this monastery lies above all in the collection of manuscripts and codices that came from here, such as the Emilianense Codex of the Councils (year 992), the Bible of Quiso (year 664) or a copy of the Apocalypse (eighth century). Here is going to emerge what is today the oldest written manifestation of the Spanish Language, the Glosas Emilianenses, that is why it is considered that this Suso Monastery and our town are the “Cradle of the Castilian”.
